Excerpts from our exclusive interview with Vinita;

Could you please talk us through your background and your journey?

I am a Merit Ranker Nutritionist from Mumbai. My journey started almost 30 years ago after I completed my Post Graduation in Dietetics and Applied Nutrition from Mumbai University

I did my internship from the prestigious KEM hospital in Mumbai. After that, I initially worked with famous Diabetologist Dr H B Chandalia for a few years and gained valuable experience and insights. Then I worked with a slimming centre for some time where people of all ages came who suffered from Obesity along with other problems like Diabetes, PCOD, Hypothyroid etc.

By this time it had been more than 10 years, I wanted to upgrade my knowledge and hence went for the Certified Diabetes Educators course from the American Diabetes Association.

Having gained significant expertise and knowledge, I decided to follow my passion for helping others lose weight, achieve good health and transform their lives. The journey has been full of learning and also satisfying so far.

How did you discover your passion?

My passion in life is to make a positive impact in people’s lives for a healthier life with my guidance about Diet and lifestyle. Immense Gratitude and respect from people whose lives have been able to transform are very satisfying.

I have been lucky to have had opportunities for giving Corporate Wellness talks also to Hyatt Regency, Volkswagen, Mahindra Finance, JCB etc, which were well appreciated. I was also the Nutritionist for Techfest 2019 of IIT Bombay for thier social initiative on Bone health.

I became associated with Apollo Clinic in Andheri in 2007 as a Senior Nutritionist and Wellness Coach. Here I got a chance to devise their Wellness Program and influence thousands of clients to lead a healthier life with diet and lifestyle guidance.

Many many positive testimonials from my clients boosted my confidence further.  From 2012 onwards, I have been running my own Diet Clinic “Eat your way to Good Health” in Andheri where I get clients for simple weight loss or sometimes with many co-morbidities like Thyroid issues, Diabetes Kidney stones, Diabetes etc. I do have Online clients from the US, Canada Thailand Dubai Malaysia etc mostly NRIs who are looking for expert Indian Nutritionists for their problems.

When a client loses more than 15 to 20kgs and sees a drastic improvement in their blood reports too, I feel immensely satisfied and their gratitude is humbling.

Despite the challenges, what keeps you going when things get tough?

Now there are many many young Nutritionists in the field. The competition was challenging but I realised my strength was in my experience and holistic way of healing, and not only bookish knowledge.

I believe the solutions to many health problems lie in the Indian kitchen. I like to propagate and advise indigenous items and not blindly follow the West and advise Avocado Blueberries and quinoa. I would rather advise Amla, Turmeric, Tulsi, Moringa which are Indian superfoods

I am blessed to have both my parents in their 80s in fairly good health. I take a lot of inspiration from them about their traditional Indian diet and good lifestyle and further pass on their health mantras to my clients too.

I consult my clients not only about Diet but lifestyle and exercise guidance too. I have learnt Yoga and have also done a Fitness trainers course too.  I feel blessed to have positively impacted so many lives.

I am also associated with Sathya Sai Medical Centre in Andheri and provide free diet Consultations once a week to the poor and underprivileged. That’s my small way of giving back to the society.

What are the three most important lessons you have learned in your life?

1) Passion for what you are doing

2) Lifelong learning to update your knowledge through reading and attending conferences and webinars as Nutrition science is always evolving

3) Holistic Healing of the person is important.

In your opinion, what are the keys to success?

It’s very important to have a passion for what you are doing then it no longer seems a chore and you enjoy every moment of it. Like I am very passionate about what I am doing and making a positive impact to make people’s lives healthier.
